Johannesburg Driving Routes
JHB (and surrounds)
There are not many interesting routes in JHB itself, so we have have focused on routes that are within a day’s drive of JHB:
Horizon Route
In the south western Free State, where the Horizon Route is located, the open space is complimented by many a little place – small towns or villages that pride themselves on surviving in the vastness. Villages that grew for a certain reason; because there were minerals found, or because there was a need for a church and centre for the surrounding farmers. These villages have survived urbanisation, and in some cases have even grown. Each village on the route has its own unique theme and characteristics.
Rixile Route
Rixile, meaning “rising of the sun” or “the dawn of day,” fits well with the area this route encapsulates. Situated in the Limpopo Province of South Africa, the route meanders it way between the small town of Giyani and the only town with a gate into the Kruger National Park, Phalaborwa. The Limpopo Province is rich in cultural history and there is much to do in this land of myths and legends. The game viewing is fantastic and possibly the best in the country, hence they it is one of the most renowned Eco-tourism destinations in Southern Africa
Maloti Route
This Route extends between the South African border and the mountain kingdom of Lesotho borders. The diverse cultures of the Basotho, English, Afrikaans, and Xhosa can be experienced between two countries. Friendly villagers sell a variety of fine arts and crafts of the highest quality, and visits to renowned rock art sites, and other activities are available including skiing, pony trekking and hiking.
