Lights, music, tears and laughter, a night out at the theater isn’t one that is easily forgotten no matter what the quality of the acting or how smoothly the production goes. In the Western Cape we have our fair share of wonder and entertainment from big theatre productions to small one man shows and each has it’s own special something that continuously locks people back night after night while the production is on.
Here is a list of theatres and the productions that are showcasing:
Artscape theatre in Cape Town City Centre:
Werther, an opera story of unrequited love. The basis of the story is about the young poet Werthers intense passion for Charlotte and where there love is deep and sincere it does not develop into adultery. Showcasing on the 7th, 10th, 12th and 14th of June at the opera house with tickets ranging between R100 and R350.
I am Cinnamon, dance rituals- ancient and contemporary. A zesty performance which explores dance rituals ancient and contemporary. Showcasing in the theatre 12th to 14th of June at 20:15 and 15th of June at 18:00 with price per ticket standing at R95.
The expressive generation, youthful wisdom. This exhibition is an expression of the issues and ideals of Cape Town’s youth, using posters and artwork. To be held in the theatre foyer between the 16th of June and the 10th of July
Barnyard Theatre in the Willow Bridge Shopping Centre:
Dancing queen a tribute to ABBA, Queen and the 70’s and 80’s. Tickets are R95 at the door with a buy one get one free special on Tuesdays and Sundays. The show is running from the 10th of June till 17th of August. Tuesday-Saturday doors open at 18:30 with the show starting at 20:00 and Sunday’s doors open at 12:30 with the show starting at 14:00.
Baxter theatre in Rondebosch:
Images of dance 12th of June to 14th of June. The production is performed by the Cape Junior ballet Co and is a performance of classical, modern and African choreography.
The evening performance is R80.00 and the afternoon performance is R50.00 and is running at the theatre.
Prison Codes is a fast paced original and humorous production about life in a South African Jail. Running from the 5th to 28th of June with tickets ranging from R50 to R95 depending on when you go.
CTCS Amici String Quartet. A one time show on Saturday the 14th of June at 20:00 in the concert hall.
The Vodacom funny festival. Running from the 18th of June till the 12th of July and showcasing some of the best Standup Comedians South Africa and the world has to offer. Tickets are going at between R66 and R110 depending on how many people are in your party.
Mummenschanz “3×11. Bought to you by the Swiss theatre group Mummenschanz. It is a widely praised performance and the group are regarded as the masters of make believe and illusion. Prices range from between R62.50 and R225 and will run from between the 17th of June and 5th of July.
Pinocchio, the celebrated and well loved story by Carlo Collodi is back in theatre. Performed by the Lilliput Players and suitable for the younger generation. Tickets are going at R30 and performances are showcasing from the 27th of May to the 12th of July.
Milnerton Playhouse:
6th of June: June social evening, a fabulously funny and entertaining evening with previous from Mavis for president performed by Atomic squad. Prices are R10 for non members and R5 for members.
14th of June: a one night only pre Grahamstown Festival play of Mavis for President. A fresh, fast and fabulously entertaining musical comedy with ticket prices set at R40.
On Broadway in Green Point:
Some enchanted evening is a performance of all those favorite songs for the musicals. Prices are R75 per ticket and the show runs from the 10th to 28th of June Tuesday to Saturdays.
Theatre on the Bay:
Chess the musical, this extravagance of love and politics set in the cold war era between Russia and America is a musical of wonder. The main players form a love triangle with everybody fighting to gain the upper hand. Running from the 7th of June to the 20th of July and prices range from between R125.00 and R275.00 depending on where you want to be seated.
Apart from the theatres please come and enjoy the classical concert scene with widely ranging venues and incredible performances.
