Ever wandered what drives and motivates a country? You can always find things that sustain a country but what are the people all about? What do they enjoy and what drives them? And most importantly what is it that interests the people of a country, the thing which is good to invest in or use for those expensive marketing campaigns?
Go to Google .com type in “/trends,” with the country you want to have a look at and you will usually find what the country looks up the most and in this way you can deduce what it is that interests the country the most. I looked up USA, South Africa, and the UK and found some interesting facts about the people.
In America the most researched items are famous people. America seems to have a fascination with celebrities and famous people, from Hulk Hogan to Paris Hilton, presidents and world celebrities.
South Africans tend to favor sports and politics, finding out and making comparisons between teams, events on the sporting calendar and local political trends. They seem to enjoy analyzing political happenings such as the recent spate of xenophobia and other happenings within and without the countries boarders.
The UK seems to favor business trends, the local and international happenings of markets and they are also very interested with internal political stability and cause and effect of things such as terrorism, racism and other issues which affect people on a more interpersonal level.
You don’t often see marketing trends following the trends of the country populace. Of course you always have the exclusive and niche markets that service an elite populace but your general markets always tend to go for some or other quirky aspects of a populace without really ever taking into account the interest of the people. The most successful marketing campaigns I’ve seen to date are the ones that found out the general movement trend, at a specific time, of a population group they were targeting and used that to their advantage in either a conscious or in our face type of campaign.
One just has to look at Nando’s advertising in South Africa, yes often their advertising is offensive, rude and taken of the air very quickly but it always seems to follow a population trend at a specific time and even after the adverts have been removed and discarded, they are still talked about for months afterwards and the brand name is very, very well known.
What has this got to do with you? Well it could be that the next marketing campaign that you pay thousands for flops. Look up the trend of the time and try again and see if this article written by an amateur has any basis in fact, and who knows maybe you will succeed in your endeavors.
