The sirens go off in your head and your gut jumps into your throat. Most of us have experienced a loss of an item at some time in our lives and we all know that terrible feeling that comes about when it happens. It is always a very good feeling when that item is returned to you especially if it contained sensitive or important information that you did not want anybody to see or that you needed desperately.
There are a whole lot of products on the market that act as security products but there are few that really tend to stick out.
One story I loved was of a woman in Singapore who had lost her phone which had software installed that when a new sim card was inserted into your phone it automatically sends a text message to every person on your phone memory. Needless to say the phone was recovered within an hr. The technology is a brainchild of Singapore company Bak2u (www.bak2u.com), the product is called PhoneBak.
Ever hear of a camera phoning home? Well that is what happened to Alison Delauzon when she had lost her camera in a restaurant. It occurred that two of the staff working there picked it up and decided to keep it, after all, “finder’s keepers, loser’s weepers” and all that. The two then proceeded to become snap happy and passed a wireless network terminal which with the help of the card inside the camera, sent the pictures to Alison and in this way she recovered the pictures that she had lost as well as photographic evidence of the two employees with her camera. They were later apprehended by the police but all charges were dropped by Alison as she was just glad to be reacquainted with her camera and her memories, the two employees didn’t go unpunished though and they promptly lost their jobs. The card that was inside Alison’s camera is called an Eye-fi it is a 2gig SD memory card that fit’s 1000’s of models of cameras. The way it works is that the card automatically uploads the pictures from the camera to a home pc or picture sharing site every time it passes a familiar wireless network receiver and sells for about $100.00 on the street.
Apple Mac lovers will really enjoy the new laptops. The way they work is when ever the computer goes missing or is opened without the correct authorization code, the Apple Mac, which has a built in camera, will automatically take a picture of the person trying to get into your computer and will then send it via a remote recognized network to your home pc or wherever you have instructed the picture to be sent to.
These products are fantastic but are not fool proof and any thief if he uses his head will be able to get around the little problems, but then again not every thief is computer literate.
