Rule Number One - Keep Left.
The general speed limit on national highways, urban freeways and other major routes in South Africa is 120 km/h (75 mph), that on secondary (rural) roads is 100 km/h (60 mph), and in built-up areas 60 km/h (35 mph) unless otherwise indicated.
All the national roads in South Africa have petrol (gas) stations with restaurants, restrooms and shops dispersed along the route, so use them to freshen-up on long drives.
If you are the only vehicle approaching the stop street, stop and make sure that there is no oncoming traffic before you proceed.
First vehicle at the stop street has the right of way.
Ensure that your vehicle comes to a complete stop before you proceed.
If the light is green, you may proceed. It is always advisable to slow down at a green light and check for approaching traffic.
When turning right and the light is green, the approaching traffic has right of way. Wait for the approaching traffic to pass before you proceed.
If you are turning left and the light is green, you may proceed.
If the traffic light turns amber, slow down and stop.
A flashing green arrow indicates you may turn in the direction indicated.
A flashing red arrow on your left indicates that you may turn if no other traffic is approaching.
A steady red or green arrow indicates that you may proceed with caution.
When traffic lights are out of order, please treat the intersection as a four way stop.
Always yield to the right at a traffic circle.
Vehicles already in the traffic circle and those vehicles entering the circle on your right have the right of way.
Proceed with caution only once all vehicles on your right have passed.
Note that all vehicles already in the circle have right of way.
It is illegal to park a vehicle on the opposite side of the road facing oncoming traffic.
It is illegal to operate a mobile phone with one hand whilst driving.
Always drive with locked doors.
Always keep your car locked when unattended, even if you’re just popping into a shop.
Do not put handbags or cellphones on the passenger seat.
Be careful if approached by strangers at traffic lights or intersections.
Do not pick up hitchhikers.
Never drink and drive.
Don’t drive if you are tired or sleepy.
Never stop and wander around in deserted areas, rather stop at an open picnic area or fuel station.
Drive courteously, allowing faster vehicles to pass.
Study the roads you plan to take, and make sure your maps are up-to-date.
