Jhb highway closed to traffic

Johannesburg - Metro police have closed the Golden Highway south of the city to traffic on Wednesday morning due to protests there.

"We've blocked off the highway in both directions between the R554 and Wimbledon Road. Demonstrators have placed rocks on the road," said Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

Motorists travelling from Orange Farm and Lenasia South to the city centre were advised to use the N1 as an alternative.

Vaal Rand police spokesperson Captain William Mcera said residents of the Vlakfontein informal settlement were behind the protest.

"They are demanding better housing."

Police buy 200 SUVs

Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) recently handed over 200 new Ford Territories to the Gauteng Police Department.

At a hand-over ceremony, which took place in January, the Gauteng Police Department took ownership of 250 new vehicles.

Among those a fleet of 200 new automatic Ford Territory 4.0 RWD TX models.

The retail price for the Territory starts at about R306 000.

The vehicles were bought with a R40m budget from the SAPS.

"We are pleased that the Gauteng Police Department has chosen to incorporate the Ford Territory into its growing fleet of vehicles," commented Roland Reid, fleet operations manager for FMCSA.

"The Territory is a very versatile all round vehicle that will no doubt be a valued servant to our law enforcement officers."

The 250 new vehicles will be used in various special units including the dog unit, flying squad and the crime-combating unit within the province.

Of these vehicles, about 80 will be allocated to Pretoria police services, 60 will go to Ekurhuleni and 60 will be deployed in Johannesburg.
