Boks study Bulls' blueprint

Liam Del Carme, Beeld

Sydney - The South African rugby team will adopt the Bulls' blueprint to beat Australia in their Tri-Nations match at Telstra Stadium here on Saturday.

Accurate kicking and buckets full of courage will be needed to stop the waltzing Wallabies, says Springbok captain Bob Skinstad.

"A big boot, guts, a tight five - maybe a tight eight - that dominate, inside backs who bring the ball back to the forwards or maintain possession and Derick Hougaard controlling matters from flyhalf can do it for us," Skinstad said on Tuesday.

"That is Bulls rugby," he added.

The skipper and his crew hope Hougaard and scrumhalf Ruan Pienaar will receive enough clean possession to put Australia under pressure.

Skinstad conceded that some outstanding individual performances would be needed to beat the Aussies for the second time in four weeks.

"Derick probably does not have the same standing in the rest of the world that he has in South Africa but I don't think anyone has achieved as much in Currie Cup rugby as he has done at such a young age.

"I have toured here with weaker flyhalves and I have played World Cup rugby with poorer flyhalves," Skinstad said.

With a game-plan based on the one Hougaard is accustomed to, a drop-goal or two could again embarrass the Wallabies, as Frans Steyn's pair did at Newlands.

"Three points are three points," Skinstad said. "When we get close enough (to the posts) I'll not stand in anyone's way; particularly not if it is Derick or Ruan."

Skinstad also said he had toured Australasia with weaker Springbok teams than the one he will captain on Saturday.

"I have played in much weaker teams. I have told the players this. If you return after being out of the country for five years, you would not have been surprised by our starting line-up. We are fortunate to have world-class players."
