Mafikeng Airport introduces Sunday flights
By Bathandwa Mbola
Mafikeng - The Mafikeng Airport has started to operate Sunday flights between Johannesburg and Mafikeng.
This has been introduced due to flight demands, as the service was initially available twice a day on weekdays.
The newly appointed MEC for the Department of Transport, Roads and Community Safety, Phenye Vilakazi has called on the community of Mafikeng and neighbouring areas to make use of the airport for more convenient travelling.
"Should the demand keep on increasing, we will increase the frequency of the flights," said MEC Vilakazi on Sunday.
The airport forms part of the Mafikeng Industrial Development Zone (MIDZ) initiated by the North West Provincial Government.
The MIDZ aims to reduce unemployment, grow the provincial economy, develop people's skills and attract investment.
Other projects of the MIDZ include the recently launched Bio-diesel Project, the Mafikeng paving project, the Industrial Park, an Export Hub as well as the Mafikeng growth and development initiative, of which the Crossing Shopping Centre is part.
The airport's operations have also created new job opportunities in North West's hospitality, car hire and airport management industries.
Project Manager for Aviation, Rickie Rennie, has attributed this to the demand that has been shown by travellers for more flights to be added.
"We believe that the demand will further rise as people get used to the fact that the airport is fully operational," said Mr Rennie.
The airport has been refurbished and upgraded to meet Civil Aviation Standards that will positively contribute to the transfer of the international airport status from Pilanesberg to Mafikeng Airport.
The Sunday flights are between 3pm and 5:30pm.
In February this year the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) re-issued the Mafikeng Airport with an international license.
The reinstatement of Mafikeng Airport's international status formed part of the industrial development around the airport.
The airport's international license was awarded to Pilanesburg Airport in 1997 in recognition of the large number of tourists who visited the Sun City complex.
Last year, the province also hinted at establishing an aviation academy, as part of its industrial development initiatives - BuaNews
