Self-Drive holidays in South Africa

Self-drive holidays have always been a popular option for people who don't want to be bothered with pre-packaged, boxed tours. These people are not bored-on-the-bus type people.

Advantages to tours are that you don’t have to think – but for many people, they prefer to do the planning themselves, meet the people they want to meet instead of being forced into a small space with rowdy karaoke lovers that you have to try make polite conversation with. Tourists are opting for a more adventurous travel holiday, not only wanting to lie basking in the sun but rather going on the wine route, bungee jumping, mountain climbing, swinging in the trees, clubbing, pubbing and many, many more activities. Why should a person not choose the activity that he or she enjoys most to spend an entire holiday on?!

Most of the roads in South Africa are well maintained, and although there may be an occasional pothole or cow in the road, the routes are suitable for a standard vehicle. Speed limits vary from 60 km/h to 120km/h. It is normal practice to move into the yellow lane when it is safe to do so in order to allow faster vehicles to overtake.

The country-side offers spectacular sites, with many places to stop along the way. If its mountains, birds, ocean, desert (or dessert!) that you enjoy, you will find it in South Africa.

A suggested route is to take a trip from Cape Town to the Knysna / George / Plett area, then continue up towards Port Elizabeth and further till Durban. Take a left towards Johannesburg and as an interesting detour go and visit Swaziland. On your way back, go around the other way via Upington and head down till you find Cape Town again. What a trip!
