Hackers deploy 'evil' worm

San Francisco - Hackers using computer worms sneakily implanted via AOL instant messages were building a potentially evil "botnet", a Silicon Valley internet security firm said on Tuesday.

FaceBook security specialists advised users not to open any files sent to them via AIM.

FaceTime Security Labs identified the worm as "W32.pipeline" and said the executable software tricked its way into people's computers by posing as a picture attached to an instant message from someone on their AOL "buddy list".

Once in computers, the worms open the doors to download infectious software that essentially lets those behind the invasion take control of the machines, according to FaceTime.

"The motivation for the bad guys seems to be in lining up as many 'install chains' as possible to insure a consistent pipeline that can be controlled by their rogue botnet," said FaceTime director of malware research Chris Boyd.

Infected attachments

AIM users are duped into letting the worms in through psychological ploy from the "social engineering" playbook, according to FaceTime.

The infected attachments are disguised as image "JPEG" files and arrive with AIM messages to the effect of "hey would it (be) okay if i upload this picture of you to my blog?"

The worm sends copies of itself to addresses found on AOL instant messaging (AIM) buddy lists of newly infected machines, FaceTime said.

The robotic computers can be amassed in a network referred to as a "botnet".

"FaceTime researchers believe that the ultimate goal of the W32.pipeline is to create a sophisticated botnet that can be used for a range of malicious purposes," the Foster City, California, company said in a statement.

Botnets under the control of hackers can be mined for personal information or used to send junk e-mail or overwhelm business websites with simultaneous requests in what are known as "denial-of-service" attacks.

Hackers could also use zombie machine armies to commit "click fraud" by having them repeatedly connect to internet advertising for which businesses are charged per click.

Foreign interest in property rising

It seems that there's renewed appetite for SA residential property from overseas buyers following a dip earlier this year after Government announced that it may introduce restrictions on foreign property ownership.

Real estate agents reported at the time that talk of Government placing some form of limitation on land ownership had put somewhat of a damper on foreign buying. However, latest figures from First National Bank (FNB) show that 6% of total SA housing sales went to foreign buyers in second quarter 2006. That is considerably more than what most industry commentators believe participation by foreign buyers to be. The general estimate is that foreign buyers represent only around 1% of the SA property market.

Real estate agents confirm that interest from offshore buyers is steadily rising. Earlier this month more than R10m worth of SA residential properties were sold by the Chas Everitt International team during the Homes Overseas exhibition at Earls Court in London. The group has also seen a noticeable increase in Internet enquiries from foreign buyers over the past three months.

Group MD Berry Everitt says in contrast to previous years, most visitors at this year's
Earls Court exhibition were serious buyers and not just people looking for tourism or lifestyle information. Everitt says this has probably been supported by the current rand to pound exchange rate of almost 14 to 1.

Di Reid of Chas Everitt's City Bowl and Atlantic Seaboard office says she has
been surprised by the increase lately in the number of walk-in international buyers visiting the group's new office in Camps Bay.

Says Reid: ``I believe our exposure of local property at the recent international
exhibition in London, coupled to the 2010 World Cup hype, have created new
interest in Cape Town property in particular.'

Meanwhile, SA sales manager for the Pam Golding Signature Collection Tara Whiting says SA property was a hot topic at the recently held Cannes Film Festival in France.

Whiting says after Tsotsi's Oscar win as best foreign film wealthy offshore investors are increasingly paying attention to SA. She says serious investors, particularly those from Dubai and Russia, expressed great interest in a number of Pam Golding Signature Collection properties in SA.

The fact that an overseas consortium has bought the V&A Waterfront for R7,04 bn – the biggest single transaction in SA to date – should further boost offshore interest in SA property.

Transnet announced yesterday that the UK-based L&R Group, who has partnered with prominent Dubai-based developer Istithmar and local BEE investors, was selected from nine short-listed bidders to acquire the prime Cape Town property. - Joan Muller

Lifting the lid: Sleepers

EVERY busy reporting season has wedged in amongst the usual blue chip suspects, an array of diverse "sleepers" - stocks that are openly doing well, but only seem to wake up once every six months at results time!

One change in recent times is that with the introduction of the trading update, the "wake-up" seems to be happening with the update. The broad theme, however, remains the same, attractive valuations in the form of low price:earnings multiple (PE), a high dividend yield or both, backed up by strong operating cash flow numbers.

Variations on the theme include fairly well established management teams, who came through a trial by fire (of some form or another) a few years previously.

Compuclear is often easier to watch on its dividend yield rather than a PE rating. It is illiquid and trades on wide spreads, which means sooner or later it finds itself at the bottom of the channel.

Recent results were a function of margin expansion following business restructure. Operating cash flow before dividend of 30c/share hugely underpins earnings.

Disaster recovery

A business restructure involved a "Business Partner program" (stated intention is 'to establish a geographical presence abroad and to improve service levels') and closure of branches. R3m was invested in the renewal of hardware and improvement of the group's disaster recovery capabilities.

Management expects turnover growth from winning contracts to supply systems to a number of major clients and for the banking and order planning systems to contribute from 2H next year. International systems require some redevelopment and may not contribute for a while.

AGI once expanded its way into trouble, but now is vigorously returning to good health. Volumes rose an aggregate 16% and results reflect a strong commercial and residential building market, and a "back to basics" manufacturing process turnaround.

As a result of the growth in the higher value-add products in particular, the group made more use of its vertical integration and as they put it, "trap margin". As a result of the factory re-organisation, which has also reduced logistics costs, the company is now sitting on vastly increased production capacity.

In addition, there are also signs of a shift away from pure manufacturing improvements, to design either for improved production or improved customer appeal. This is a clear sign of confidence in the turnaround process started two years ago.

Slowdowns

Enviroserve's headlines growth of 40% to 63c/share is a function of turnaround and the harvest of capex past. This is particularly reflected in operating cash flow before dividend and after maintenance capex of 72c/share underpinning heps.

The caveat for the near-term future is no severe slowdowns in manufacturing and mining. In the domestic waste market, management is satisfied that the scale of operations is in line with the amount of work available and activity in Angola looks positive too.

Iliad's interim earnings growth of 20% defied the price pessimism, following the reserve bank's shift in stance to rate hikes. However, just as home prices and rentals do not move in sync, so too does home building and renovation also move in a desynchronised fashion.

Of course, steep hikes, such as we saw in 1998, would wipe all of the above cycles out, but God willing we won't see that anytime soon!

Acquisitions have certainly featured, but there seems to be a solid model for their digestion. Management are not being complacent about the state of the debt affordability for homeowners, nor the fact that confidence of builders is starting to decline, but is planning for a scenario of some slippage rather than "all fall down".

Mature small cap

City Lodge's earnings growth of 17.6% really did catch the market napping despite an accurate I-Net consensus forecast of three analysts. A case of seeing is believing, though certainly growth in room occupancies from 77% to 79% wasn't a common or garden achievement!

Spur is a far from mature small cap, even though it has grown steadily for 20 years of being listed. That the company is prepared to grow earnings through use of shares buybacks, shows that this old dog is not out of tricks!

They seem determined to keep operations tight, as evidenced by the outsourcing of national distribution of restaurant supplies from the group's central kitchens to an independent distributor.

It's worth remembering that franchising is a relatively low-risk business, since income is driven on a royalty basis and the economic cycle would tend to impact the degree of growth, rather than imperil it.

Even so the prospects commentary put out by management is somewhat more cautious than other consumer stocks have been, and dare we say it, possibly more realistic?

That's a good sign, the number of managements I've heard recently say that they are unaffected by rate hikes would lead one to conclude that the economy doesn't exist!

Cycle stock

Advtech's interim earnings growth of 40.3% belies its slightly different "sleeper" status: it's a lagging economic cycle stock, and the real test will come in the 2007 enrolment year. It may also have upside if it's litigation against the Welihockyjs (vendors of a business that it once purchased) is successful.

Digicore's earnings growth of 55% made for a large "wake up" by the market. Turnover rose 27.7% and unit sales increased by 52% and the company continues to insist that it could lay in extra volume at minimal extra overhead. Strong local and export trading are gearing up ever improving overhead recovery.

Digicore designs and manufactures units and software for the continual tracking of moving vehicles, as well as providing the support services for this in local and export markets. Stolen vehicle recovery has also recently been added to the suite.

There has been growth in international business through distribution contracts - i.e. the distributor takes the risk. Government off take is growing, with potential to improve service delivery by monitoring their vehicles e.g. ambulances going directly to destinations instead of via the Tote etc.

Approximately half of all units are exported, with most growth coming from Europe and Pakistan. So while high vehicle crime rates in South Africa are a small boon, the main selling proposition is efficient fleet management. Netstar will be entering this market as a competitor, but have some way to catch up.

'China risk'

It is notable that almost none of the above have any meaningful "China risk". Without presuming to know the resurgent Mr (Jacob) Zuma (who to the best of my knowledge has expressed very few public opinions on economics), broad opinion has it that economic policy would be left-leaning. If that were the case, then there is one new potential sleeper, which we would also expect to do well in the current environment.

KAP International is an interesting agglomeration of asset based businesses coming out of turnaround. Industrial businesses include vehicle leather trim production, industrial footwear and PET resin and the Consumer segment include Jordan shoes (Asics, Bronx and Jordan brands) Glodina and Bull Brand.

Realisation of economies of scale have resulted in good results for Bull Brand. Management's prospects commentary is bullish for every single major business unit.

Why do I say such a stock would benefit from Mr Zuma's presidency?

Simplistically, one would expect a more left-leaning policy to embrace a more active import tariff schedule. This would benefit companies (having to square off against Chinese companies - who have a habit of not pricing in for depreciation) engaged in manufacturing export, or import substitution.

Other examples might include Seardel, Metair, Bell, Dorbyl, Hudaco, Nampak, Astrapak, Argent, AECI.

Property price growth slows

Johannesburg - The increases in residential real estate prices continued to slow during the course of 2006, the South African Reserve Bank said on Thursday.

The year-on-year rate of increase in the prices of residential property in the middle segment of the market, as measured by Absa, decelerated uninterruptedly from 35.5% in September 2004 to 13.6% in August 2006, the SARB noted in its latest quarterly economic bulletin.

The month-on-month rate of increase in house prices fell below 1% in March 2006 and declined to only 0.8% in August - the lowest growth rate in just over five years.

At the same time, banks' mortgage advances continued to grow apace.

The bulk of the mortgage advances granted continued to be in respect of existing buildings, with less than 10% of the total amount granted in the first half of 2006 flowing to the construction of new buildings, the SARB added.

The SARB noted that the year-on-year rate of increase of property prices in the luxury market segment declined to below 10% from the second quarter of 2005, and continued to slow further in the first half of 2006.

The year-on-year rate of increase in residential property prices in the affordable houses category remained at a high level in 2005, before decelerating significantly in the second quarter of 2006.

Progressively higher monthly repayments on new mortgage bonds, due to rising house prices and an increase in mortgage rates from June 2006, together with the prolonged period during which growth in property prices has exceeded growth in remuneration, may partly explain the slowdown in growth of property prices, the SARB said.

Please pass the gravy... train

Johannesburg - The Democratic Alliance in Gauteng is worried about the expenses of the province's MEC for finance after it became known he spent more than R226 000 on functions in a year.

Percy Mthimkulu, spokesperson of Paul Mashatile, MEC, said the expenses on his official credit card (with a limit of R400 000) were all of an official nature.

The finance MEC's expenses follow an exclusive party costing more than R360 000 hosted by Nomvula Mokonyane, MEC for housing, and the R700 000 spent by Brian Hlongwa, MEC for health, to upgrade his office.

Mashatile's credit-card expenses for the period June 2005 to June 2006 indicated he had spent more than R163 000 at the luxury five-star restaurant, Auberge Michel, in Sandton the nine times he dined there.

The expenses included, among others, amounts of R19 354.50, R9 854.50, R10 354.50 and R96 375.40.

No special event that day

That entry was, according to Mthimkulu, for a function held for officials of the Gauteng shared services centre after the MEC's budget speech.

A manager of Auberge Michel, who asked to remain anonymous, said the restaurant hosted no special event on that day and had been open as usual for lunch and dinner.

The restaurant could seat 70 and private functions were held in a top-floor room which could seat 30 people.

Mashatile also dined at other top restaurants like Ritrovo in Waterkloof, Pretoria, Pigalle in Sandton and Wine on the Square in Sandton.

Only Mashatile was authorised to use the credit card and he said in his written reply no unauthorised expenses had been incurred.

The best Caspian Beluga caviar

Even though he understood the MEC sometimes had to treat important people to a meal, said Brian Goodall, DA leader in the legislature, he found it difficult to understand how Mashatile could spend more than R96 000 in a restaurant on one day.

"While the MEC had to decide between deboned trotter filled with foie gras, served on a bed of porcini and the best Caspian Beluga caviar, you wonder if he thinks about the people living in squatter camps, whose lives he has to improve."

Mthimkulu said the department was formulating a statement and that Mashatile, who was overseas at present, already had received numerous questions about the use of the credit card from the legislature.

Proteas whitewash Zimbabwe

Potchefstroom - Mark Boucher blasted a 44-ball century as South Africa went on a scoring spree to gain a 171-run win in the third and final one-day international against Zimbabwe at Sedgars Park on Wednesday.

Boucher finished with 147 not out off 68 balls as South Africa reached 418 for five, only the fourth time 400 has been made in a one-day international - and the third time in four matches involving South Africa.

South Africa restricted Zimbabwe to 247 for four in reply, completing a 3-0 series sweep

Boucher's century was the second-fastest of all time, behind Shahid Afridi's 100 off 37 balls for Pakistan against Sri Lanka in Nairobi in 1996.

South Africa took advantage of winning the toss for the first time in the series and batting in ideal conditions.

But, they fell short of regaining the world record, which they set when they made 438 for nine in an astonishing run chase against Australia's 434 for four in Johannesburg last March.

Sri Lanka bettered their record with 443 for nine against Holland in Amstelveen in July.

World record

Boucher said: "We were targeting the world record, but we lost our way a little in the middle when (Justin) Kemp got out."

He paid tribute to relative newcomers Loots Bosman and Alviro Petersen, who put on 160 off 126 balls for the first wicket.

Bosman, in his third match, hit 88 off 70 balls before being stumped off debutant leg-spinner Tafadzwa Kamungozi, while Petersen, in his second international, made 80 off 74 deliveries.

Captain Jacques Kallis made 50 and Boucher, promoted to No 4, rode his luck with some powerful strokeplay.

He was dropped on the midwicket boundary on seven and at cover on 59 before reaching his maiden one-day international century in his 220th match.

He was dropped three more times after reaching his century as he virtually tried to hit every ball out of the ground in a frantic end to the innings. He hit 10 sixes and eight fours.

"It was my night tonight. I was dropped a couple of times and rode my luck. The deck was really good," said Boucher.

Little difficulty

Although Zimbabwe were never remotely on target to challenge the South African total, they were able to bat out the 50 overs without any difficulty.

Left-handed opening batsman Terry Duffin made a dogged, career-best 88 off 134 balls and shared partnerships of 94 for the second wicket with Justice Chibhabha (46) and 103 for the third with Hamilton Masakadza (55).

Masakadza provided the most-enterprising batting of the innings, scoring his runs off 53 balls.

Australian umpire Daryl Harper stood in the match despite hearing earlier on Wednesday that his mother had died in Australia. The teams observed a minute's silence in sympathy.

'George Bush is the devil'

New York - Venezuela's outspoken President Hugo Chavez called United States President George W Bush "the devil", "a liar" and a "tyrant" in a scathing attack before the United Nations general assembly on Wednesday.

"Yesterday, the devil came here and this place still smells of sulphur," Chavez said, referring to Bush's speech at the assembly on Tuesday.

"He came here talking as if he were the owner of the world."

Chavez launched a virulent attack on what he called US "hegemony" and renewed calls for drastic reform of the UN to reduce the US influence.

His speech was warmly applauded. It was the second anti-Bush tirade at the assembly in two days, following Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad speech on Tuesday.

'Democracy of bombs'

Chavez quoted at different times leftwing US intellectual Noam Chomsky, Greek philosopher Aristotle and film director Alfred Hitchcock. He also called Bush "a liar" and "a tyrant."

"We cannot allow world dictatorship to be consolidated," he told the assembly.

US "imperialism," he added, was "a threat to the survival of the human race."

Bush promoted "a false democracy of the elite" and a "democracy of bombs," he declared.

Bush's vision of democracy was worthy of a Hitchcock thriller which he said should be called "The Devil's Recipe."

The left-wing Venezuelan president is a frequent critic of the US administration, which he accuses of backing a plot to overthrow him. He renewed the accusation during the speech.

Washington considers Chavez, a close ally of Communist Cuba, to be a destabilising influence in Latin America - even as the United States is a major consumer of Venezuelan oil.

When asked about Chavez' speech, US national security spokesman Frederick Jones said: "Not worthy of reaction. Not worthy of comment."

Chavez has been pressing for Venezuela to get a seat on the 15-member UN security council when a vote is held in October.

Like Ahmadinejad, he called for drastic change to the world body to reduce the influence of the United States and other permanent members.

Wants end to the veto

Chavez said the UN headquarters should be moved away from New York, and suggested that even Venezuela would be a better place.

He called for an expansion of the security council, more effective means to handle world conflicts and greater powers for the secretary-general.

He also called for an end to the veto of any resolution for the permanent members: the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France.

"The UN system born after the second world war has collapsed, it is worthless," said Chavez.

Airport rage at overbookings

Waldimar Pelser, Beeld

Johannesburg - South African Airways introduced an extra flight from here to Cape Town on Wednesday night after many furious passengers had been taken off an over-booked afternoon flight.

Elsa Kruger of Johannesburg told Die Burger there were "queues of angry passengers" at SAA counters at Johannesburg International Airport when they were told there was no room for them on the 16:00 SA353 flight to Cape Town on which they had been booked.

"How on earth does one over-book the flight so soon before the long weekend?" she asked.

Then she had a flight at 17:00 and, as compensation, received a free ticket from SAA.

SAA spokesperson Jacqui O'Sullivan said the airline was experiencing a "very big demand" in the run-up to the long weekend and 18 passengers were affected by over-booking on the 16:00 flight.

Mohr, 93, breaks world record

Mariska Spoormaker, Die Burger

Port Elizabeth - His shoulders are bent from his 93 years, but a lion roars in his chest.

And, so loudly that George resident Mohr Keet became the world record-holder on Wednesday for the oldest man to do the world's highest bungee jump - 216m from the Bloukrans Bridge.

The height of the bridge spooked some of the members of the small group, but Keet was resolute.

Five years ago, when he was 88, he also jumped from the same bridge.

But, he wanted to do it again, he explained before his big jump, "to feel the fall, to feel I'm flying".

Because, he said, when he jumped the first time "I was too stressed to feel anything!"

He forgot the T-shirt

And, if it hadn't been for these nerves, he wouldn't have pitched up on Wednesday for his second big one.

The tradition of the Bloukrans bungee jump is that only those who have jumped can buy a particular T-shirt.

He had forgotten to buy this after his first jump.

But, his son-in-law, Ian Parsons in England, thought a man should get the T-shirt for such a jump, even if it was years later.

So, Parsons sent an e-mail to the Bloukrans people, asking if he could not buy it for his father-in-law.

Marketing manager Werner Botha replied they would post the T-shirt to Keet at George for free.

Keet got his T-shirt - and the Bloukrans Bridge called?

On Wednesday, he heeded the call.

Five! Four! Three! - and everyone held their breath for "oupa" - Two, Bungeeeeee!

And, away went Keet - at the age of 93.

His daughter Lucille Keet, and granddaughter Bridget Bischoff fell silent, looked at the monitor to see how he was getting on under the bridge.

30 years younger

But, he looked like an old hand at bungee-jumping, even had his arms folded across his chest during the last few jerks of the elastic.

Before long he was hoisted upwards again.

He was so exhilarated it was as if he had suddenly become 30 years younger.

"! I could feel myself falling! It was fantastic! One day I'll do it again!"

Something like that would not surprise Lucille in the least.

"He's been like that all his life - a huge spirit, free and independent."

Zuma: Lawyers 'worse than apartheid'

Johannesburg - When the prosecution team investigated Jacob Zuma "from head to toe" and simultaneously searched his homes in Johannesburg, Nkandla and Durban, he told them they had behaved worse than their apartheid counterparts.

"Even at the worst case of what they would call a terrorist - we were once called terrorists - they would come and deal with you, even kill you, but they would not involve other people," Zuma said, explaining that his family also had been dragged into the searches.

Zuma described the stress of the investigation and prosecution in the corruption case against him to thousands of unionists at the Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) congress on Wednesday night.

His case had been thrown out of court by Judge Herbert Msimang in Pietermaritzburg High Court earlier in the day.

He said the investigation team antagonised his family during the searches and he had challenged them on this.

'No love for South Africa'

Their response was that it was the law.

"I said you've got to change that because it's a wrong law," said Zuma.

"I said: 'I must tell you, you are doing even what the apartheid state did not do. If they thought there was somebody who had committed a crime, they would investigate until they had a case, then charge the person.'

"I said: 'You are worse than them.' "

He added that he had told the investigators that they did not have a love for South Africa "because you are antagonising this nation against the organs of the state".

Zuma thanked Cosatu repeatedly and in several languages for standing by him and believing in the course of justice.

"I thought it would be appropriate just to stand here and thank you for the very principled decision you took as a federation," he told cheering delegates.

"You were straight. At the end of the day, the defence of this country is in your hands.

"You have proved it and given confidence that no individual or party can take us out of this cause."

Zuma said that Wednesday's judgment made him regain confidence in the judiciary, "that, in fact, we have a judiciary that interprets the law. He (Judge Msimang) stuck to the correct principles which is the best defence of our constitution, our democracy."

He called on the media to apologise for the way the case was reported on, saying he was found guilty before appearing in court.

"The media, eh you!" he said ruefully.

He asked why the media had not asked where the prosecution's case was after a prolonged period of investigation.

Case 'disappeared'

"I did not even ask to have a day in court. I just asked, if there is a case against me, why was I not taken to court."

He said even the judge commented on how the prosecution's case disappeared.

He said the prosecution got into increasing difficulties with the case and described it as being like a pig that goes into a hole, eats itself fat and can't get out again.

Skinny model row clouds show

London - London Fashion Week got under way on Monday with shows from two top Asian designers heading down the catwalk first, amid simmering controversy over calls for stick-thin models to be banned.

The furore over hyper-slim models in Madrid has threatened to cloud the London clothes fest, where Giorgio Armani's show on Thursday is among the most eagerly-awaited parades.

"I think it's a debate that will happen all in good time and all contributions are welcome," six foot model Erin O'Connor told AFP, diplomatically reticent.

At the launch breakfast, Stuart Rose, the chair of the British Fashion Council that organises the event, declined to be drawn, commenting only that the week had started "slightly controversially".

Rose, also chief executive of British department store Marks & Spencer, has previously indicated he is not in favour of legislation.

But big names and officials are likely to have a hard time avoiding such questions for the duration of the five-day, 50 show event, being held at the Natural History Museum in the west of London.

Gharani Strok's show attracted an array of footballers' wives and girlfriends, including Elen Rives, Spanish partner of Chelsea and England star Frank Lampard.

There were celebrities on the catwalk as well - Lily Cole, the redhead teenager frequently mentioned in the skinny models row, strode nonchalantly down the catwalk, showing no sign of being affected by her new-found notoriety.

The clothes themselves were classic with pretty detailing - billowed cuffs and light floral designs in white and yellow were standouts.

Pressure has been growing on the organisers of fashion to ban ultra-skinny models following restrictions imposed earlier this month at Madrid fashion week.

Organisers of the Spanish event placed restrictions on "unhealthily thin" models - deemed to be those with a body mass index of below 18 - from appearing and authorities in Milan are said to be considering a similar ban.

The restrictions have triggered widespread media speculation about whether models such as Kate Moss, reportedly 49kg, and Cole could be affected by them.

Egoli actor is hot property

Cape Town - Izak Davel appeared in Egoli for only three months, but could become SA's favourite local celebrity.

Davel is one of the front-runners in gossip magazine heat's Hot 100 list of celebrities.

This list, giving ordinary people a chance to vote for their favourite stars, is one of the magazine's most popular projects.

Davel recently made his debut in Egoli as the son of Louwna (Brümilda van Rensburg), whom she had to give up for adoption years ago. His chances of returning to the soap seem good.

He said it is "fun and a great honour" to be supported so enthusiastically by fans.

Although children and old ladies regularly stop him in the street, his fame "hasn't really sunk in yet".

Besides Egoli, Davel has also acted in a string of theatrical productions, including Joseph and Jesus Christ Superstar.

"They are two completely different mediums, one cannot compare them," he said.

Heat editor Melinda Shaw said local celebs have so far been more popular than last year. Last year's favourites included stars like Jennifer Aniston, Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

Contestants in the reality series Survivor are also emerging as possible favourites. Shaw said Mzi Tyhokolo, Gareth Tjasink and Jacinda Louw were well supported.

"And it's always exciting to see new names. One example is Davel, who isn't even acting in a soap at present. People were obviously crazy about Scab, his character who was in the soap for only three months."

Shaw thought it would be interesting to see if he would be asked to return to the soap opera because of his "obvious popularity".

Egoli producer Burgert Muller said: "There's a big possibility that we'll bring back the character."

Freshlyground are boiling

London - South African Afro-pop combo Freshlyground is one of the five nominees for Best African Act at the 2006 MTV Europe Music Awards (MTV EMAs).

Trevor... NOT for president

Pretoria - Finance Minister Trevor Manuel does not want to be president - and that is official.

His privacy and lifestyle did not allow it, said Manuel in an interview in the latest edition of Insig magazine, now on the shelves.

Manuel, who expressed opinions on matters such as brown identity and Springbok rugby, told how he was sitting in a restaurant with his three sons last year when Jacob Zuma was dismissed as deputy president.

"My youngest son told me the children at his school said it might be my turn to be deputy now.

Sniffer dogs go in first

"I told him we were sitting in the restaurant now and it was okay, but if that happened to me we couldn't do this any more.

"And he said: 'Well, if they offer it to you, maybe you shouldn't take it.' "

The finance minister said that he thought one would have to forfeit too much personal freedom if one was president or deputy president - a game of golf or shopping would be out of the question, because dogs always had to be sent in beforehand, for security reasons.

Benji's back home - to biltong

Pretoria - A tasty piece of biltong and an overjoyed handler waited for Benji the patrol dog who was found three days after being stolen with a police car in Hebron, north of Pretoria.

Benji's handler, Tshwane metro police inspector Stephen de Vos, said: "Tears of heartache flowed on Friday night when it seemed that Benji was gone for good.

"This morning (Tuesday) they flowed from pure joy because he'd been found.

A colleague had traced his beloved German shepherd in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Benji and a drug-sniffer dog, Jade, were in their handlers' Toyota Venture on Friday night when it was stolen in front of a house in Orchards, Pretoria, where they were investigating a case.

Was really upset

De Vos and sergeant Chris Ogilvie had reacted to a case of attempted burglary and the unmarked police car was stolen within eight minutes of them stopping at the house.

De Vos said: "We leave the dogs inside the car only if there are other dogs on the premises.

"It's a long time since I've been as upset as I was when I went outside and saw the car had been stolen. Not about the vehicle, but about the dog."

Constable Everson Manyana, also of Tshwane Metro police, heard a dog barking outside his house on Tuesday about 02:00.

When he investigated, he saw the "strange" shepherd dog standing there and remembered the reports about the missing dog.

He immediately phoned the metro police dog unit, who sent someone to investigate.

De Vos said: "A colleague called Benji's name and he responded at once. Benji is quite fierce and responds only to my commands, so they loaded him very carefully into the vehicle."

Got the biltong ready

He was phoned about 04:30 on Tuesday to identify Benji.

"I was so glad. My mom started cutting biltong at once, because we knew he'd not eaten for a long time."

Jade had been found at a shopping centre in Soshanguve on Saturday morning when she jumped into a motorist's vehicle.

Local music for heritage month

Johannesburg - Indigenous music will feature in a month-long celebration of African heritage, the department of Arts and Culture said on Saturday.

"This unique and innovative project highlights our rich cultural heritage. It is about the identity of the African people and, most importantly, preserves, transcends and elevates our heritage," said Minister Pallo Jordan.

Jordan referred to the African genre of music which merges choristers, marimba and jazz into Chorimba.

"When you listen to Chorimba you are bewitched by the clicks, whirrs and oscillating hums of the choristers, the gritty jazz sounds and thumping Marimba sounds. When I made contact with Duke (Ngcukana, founder of Chorimba), I wanted a concert that would showcase dignified choral songs. The works had to be presented in a format that pushed the creative envelope and paraphrased choral music."

Ngcukana, a choral master, trumpeter and jazz educator said he developed the genre more than 25 years ago.

"I want to celebrate the composers of the songs, those that have come before us and keep their legacies alive, so that musicians of today should tap into their songs, using them in their contemporary repertoires."

His vision is to take Chorimba into households across South Africa, go on tour and celebrate the great choral masters of the past was his firm ambition.

"It is our social responsibility as musicians to be exploring and developing new South African music forms."

Six rescued near Pearly Beach

Johannesburg - Six people were rescued after a ski boat capsized about 150m off Quoin Point near Pearly Beach in the Overberg on Monday, the National Sea Rescue Institute said.

The boat was crewed by four fishermen. Two friends of the fishermen swam out to try and help the four after their boat capsized.

"All six people were static line-hoisted to shore," NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said.

"They were taken two at the time. All six are safe and requiring no medical assistance."

The boat later washed up on shore.

4x4=woes

The huge losses being encountered by the "Big Three" US manufacturers, General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler, are based on one thing, and one thing only - their insistence on building bigger and bigger 4x4s.

These huge gas-guzzling machines flooded the US market, and their roads, until just about every family had one, and those who didn't aspired to having one.

And this phenomenon spilled over into the rest of the world, where a massive trend has developed that pretends 4x4s are safer and more desirable.

The reality, though, is that they are anything but safer, being less manoeuvrable, more prone to rolling over, and more difficult to steer and stop, the latter because they weigh so much, and their tyres don't grip as well because of that.

Most 4x4s never go further than the local mall and their "off-road" activities are restricted to puddle jumping and climbing pavements.

As a result motor manufacturers - particularly the Germans - are developing "tarmac 4x4s", big hulking machines not far removed from the American behemoths in size, but saved from being totally impractical and unsafe by the fitment of myriad electronic devices and by using advanced (and expensive) engineering.

And nobody, it seems, is heeding the warning inherent in the US manufacturers' woes - that sooner or later there's going to be backlash, and owners are going to be lumbered with vehicles they can't afford, and can't get rid of.

The reason why the US has turned its back on the 4x4 - or SUV, as the Americans prefer to call them - is because of the price of oil.

Big, heavy vehicles use more fuel than small light ones.

Powerful vehicles use more fuel than less-powerful ones.

It doesn't matter if you're using petrol or diesel - the big vehicles always use more than the small ones.

I think most of us acknowledge that the price of fuel is on an ever-rising spiral. Sometimes it dips, but most of the time it keeps climbing.

At the moment many of the owners of SUVs are protected from the real costs of filling up by the companies they work for, who throw in petrol cards, extra allowances, and so on, as part of the rewards package.

Sooner or later, though, this HAS to come to an end.

The number crunchers will look at what it's costing and cry foul.

The Government will realise it's not benefiting the country one iota, and will cry foul.

And SUV owners will look at them and just cry!

Vatican opens secret archive

Vatican City - The Vatican on Monday allowed access for the first time to millions of diplomatic letters, private correspondence and other documents in its secret archives spanning the 1922-1939 papacy of Pius XI.

These could provide insight into the degree to which the Holy See was concerned by the growing persecution of Jews in Europe.

For years, the Vatican has struggled to defend Pius's successor - the wartime Pope Pius XII, who had also served as Pius XI's secretary of state - against claims he did not do enough to save Jews from the Holocaust.

Researchers said it could take months or years to study the contents of about 30 000 bundles of documentation from a period when fascism, Nazism, Communism and nationalism clashed across the European continent.

'Bit of chaos'

Archives officials said that by late morning 50 researchers had shown their credentials to gain admittance, although some of the scholars were interested in consulting material on earlier papacies.

"There was a bit of chaos" at the archives, said Alessandro Visani, a researcher in the contemporary history at Rome's Sapienza University who, like many others, was hoping for an initial idea of what was in the files.

"I wanted to look at something, but someone was already consulting it," said Visani, whose research includes the attitudes of church hierarchy toward the 1938 anti-Jewish laws of Italian fascist dictator Benito Mussolini.

Files 'very rich'

The material in the files "is very rich", the Italian news agency Apcom quoted another Sapienza researcher, Emma Fattorini, as saying as she left the archives.

One tantalising question revolves around an encyclical Pius XI commissioned to denounce racism and the violent nationalism of Germany.

But he died before releasing it and it has never been made public.

It was never published "in part because of his death and in part because it was judged to be inopportune politically", said Visani.

Visani said he was hoping the files would yield insight into the frank views prelates privately held about Mussolini's racial laws against Italy's tiny Jewish community.

Proteas clinch Zimbabwe series

East London - South Africa cruised to a comfortable six-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in a limited-overs match at Buffalo Park on Monday in a match that failed to deliver much excitement at all for the patient crowd of 4 800.

South Africa scored 156 for four in a workmanlike display after Zimbabwe had been dismissed for 152 in their 50th over.

By so doing they clinched the three-match series 2-0, with the last match scheduled to be played in Potchefstroom on Wednesday.

But most disturbing for South Africa, a number of batsmen played themselves in well, but there were no big innings from any of the top-order batsmen.

Boeta Dippenaar perished for nine when he mistimed a pull to be caught at a deep point position off Anthony Ireland, who bowled well at times to finish with figures of 2-40.

Hurricane innings

Loots Bosman played a typical hurricane innings, smashing his way to 38 with two sixes and four fours before medium-pacer Piet Rinke rattled his stumps.

This was Rinke's second wicket in the same over, after he had bowled debutant Alviro Petersen for 20.

Bosman and Petersen had added 53 in double-quick time for the second wicket, and at the end Justin Kemp (28 not out) and JP Duminy (31 not out) were in full cry with an unfinished partnership of 47 in 31 minutes off 50 balls.

Kemp was dropped on nine by Utseya at mid-wicket off Ireland - an easy catch that popped in and out of the Zimbabwe captain's hands.

Kemp smashed a huge six over the long-on boundary off Ireland, followed by a four to spoil the medium-pacer's figures.

Proteas stand-in captain Jacques Kallis reached an important milestone, becoming the first cricketer to have scored over 8 000 runs and taken 200 wickets in both ODIs and Tests.

In the Zimbabwe innings the only meaningful contributions came from the number three batsman Chamu Chibhaba, who scored 38, and Elton Chigumbura, 30.

Lucky escape

The two added a steady 47 for the sixth wicket after five wickets had fallen for 73.

Towards the end of the innings a hard-hitting 24 not out from Utseya gave some substance to the innings as Zimbabwe toiled at about three to the over throughout.

Utseya and last man Ed Rainsford added 20 for the last wicket, including 13 off Shaun Pollock's last over.

Chibhabha had some fortune on seven when he played the ball onto his stumps in Andrew Hall's first over, but the bails failed to fall.

He then settled down to play a determined innings, but got bogged down somewhat in the twenties.

Opener Tafadzwa Mufambisi also batted well for his 21.

South African all-rounder Andrew Hall was named as man of the match for his steady bowling when he captured 3-23.

Diesel tanker overturns on N11

Durban - A diesel tanker overturned on the N11 near Newcastle on Monday morning, causing the highway to be closed to traffic at Majuba pass, KwaZulu-Natal traffic police said.

Spokesperson Colin Govender said it was not yet known how the accident happened as the driver was being treated at the Newcastle hospital for minor injuries.

"We will only know once we have spoken to the driver."

He said traffic police have since diverted traffic to the Memel and Volksrust roads in the area.

The patch of road will only be open to traffic once it has been cleaned up.

He said the road had been closed all morning and would probably be opened in the afternoon.

Shuttle Atlantis heading home

Houston - Shuttle Atlantis undocked from the International Space Station on Sunday to end a stay in which the Atlantis crew installed a massive new solar power unit to resume station construction after a nearly four-year hiatus.

The shuttle gently backed away from the station docking port and, before flying off, was to circle the half-finished complex, taking photographs for National Aeronautics and Spade Administration engineers to study.

The station now has a new 73m long pair of wings that are the solar panels which will convert sunlight into electricity for the station.

Atlantis arrived at the station two days after its September 9 launch from Florida, carrying a 17.5-ton truss structure with the solar power unit folded up inside.

The truss was attached to the station on Tuesday and the solar panels unfurled on Thursday.

14 more shuttle flights

Atlantis astronauts made three space walks to carry out the installation and other tasks.

The power unit, which is the second on the station, was the first major addition to the station since November 2002.

Construction on the $100bn outpost came to a halt when Nasa grounded the shuttle fleet after the 2003 Columbia disaster.

The U.S. space agency plans at least 14 more shuttle flights to complete the space complex before shuttles are retired in 2010.

After circling the station, Atlantis will fly 128 km away where it will stay until the crew, using sensors and cameras on a robot arm, perform a final inspection of the shuttle heat shield on Monday. It will return to Earth on Wednesday.

The astronauts inspected the heat shield a day after launch, but this time they will be looking for any damage from micrometeoroids that hurtle through space.

The shuttle inspections were developed by Nasa as part of its safety upgrades after the Columbia accident.

Russians close behind

Columbia suffered heat shield damage at launch that went undetected and the spacecraft disintegrated while returning to Earth, killing the seven astronauts on board.

The shuttle's departure makes room for a Russian Soyuz spacecraft that will launch from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan late on Sunday night, Houston, carrying Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Tyurin, US astronaut Michael Lopez-Alegria, and space tourist Anousheh Ansari, an Iranian-born American.

The Soyuz will dock with the space station on Wednesday, a few hours before Atlantis is scheduled to land at Kennedy Space Centre in Florida.

James Bond bows to beer

Los Angeles - Forget the martini - give Bond a beer.

That could be the rallying cry in the upcoming 007 movie, Casino Royale, in which the suave British super-spy is set to drop his exclusive taste for martinis and instead take up some plebeian beer-swilling, according to the Hollywood Reporter Friday.

Producers of the movie have even signed a six-figure deal with beer giant, Heineken, for a promotional partnership that will include a television commercial shot on the Bond set featuring Bond girl Eva Green and directed by Oscar-winner Stephen Gaghan.

James Bond purists will be grateful to know that the beer plot is not just a money grab by the movie's makers.

Tutu wows PeaceJam teens

Denver - Archbishop Desmond Tutu looked across a sea of cheering teenagers from around the globe on Sunday, and told them not that only can they change the world, but they must.

"I look at you, and I am in awe," he said on the final day of an international call for peace and action called PeaceJam.

"You are the ones who are going to make this a better world."

The archbishop, a 1984 Nobel Peace Prize recipient, was one of 10 Nobel laureates to address the 3 000 young people gathered from 31 countries for the 10th anniversary of the PeaceJam movement at the University of Denver.

In the three-day run, laureates urged the world's youth to not just yearn for peace, but to take action.

Tutu said on Sunday: "The fact of the matter is, Nobel laureates don't come floating down from Heaven.

"There was a time when we were very much like you."

From writing letters urging the United Nations to push the government of Myanmar to change, to calling for an end to political imprisonment worldwide, the laureates not only encouraged, but demanded the assembled youth to answer the call.

'Small acts pay big dividends'

"And all of you are peacemakers. We are opposed to war. We stand for peace."

Tutu told the crowd not to be overwhelmed by the scope of the world's problems. Even the smallest acts pay big dividends, he said.

"You feed one child, you feed two children, that's important. That's how you make a difference," he said. "You make a difference where you are."

PeaceJam, founded in Arvada, Colorado, by Dawn Engle and Ivan Suvanjieff, is a global programme promoting peace through education and encouragement of the world's youth.

Muir: Bulls too physical

Durban - 'Piling in' took on a new meaning on Saturday when the Blue Bulls trampled the Sharks in a brilliant Currie Cup match.

The visitors, who had to win to keep alive their chances of reaching the semi-finals, completed a well-deserved 50-32 victory after leading 27-20 at half-time.

Just how hard the Bulls piled into the Sharks was evident in two tackles by centre JP Nel.

One resulted in Brad Barritt leaving the field with suspected concussion and the other saw Wouter Moore being taken off with a ruptured spleen.

Nel and his teammates were fearless. They went into the Sharks as if they were playing in a World Cup final.

The home team, after losing three experienced and tough forwards the day before the match - AJ Venter, BJ Botha and Deon Carstens - had no answer to the Bulls' game.

"They taught us a lesson in physical rugby," said Sharks coach Dick Muir afterwards.

"Their will to win, as well as the unforced errors we made, made the difference. We missed AJ and the others, especially when things became hot.

Still under pressure

"They were really tough, but cowboys don't cry. We'll just have to pull ourselves together for Saturday's match in Bloemfontein."

Bulls coach Pote Human was understandably relieved after his team's brilliant victory, but conceded that they remained under pressure.

Human made a point of praising the Bulls' defence, honed by John McFarland, as well as the way the team's Springboks helped their teammates raise their game.

"These factors, as well as Heyneke Meyer's team talk before the game, and players who played to their ability made the difference," he said.

Gary Botha, the captain, revealed how his team had planned to take on the Sharks in intense 10-minute bursts.

"We started and finished the first half well and also started the second half strongly.

Injured shoulder

"That was our plan. I was impressed by the way the guys kept up the pressure in the second half," said Botha.

The best players in the Bulls team were two of the Tri-Nations Springboks, Wynand Olivier and Pierre Spies.

They were well supported by Botha, Danie Rossouw and Heini Adams.

The best Sharks players were scrumhalf Ruan Pienaar, who went off with a shoulder injury late in the match, and the exciting No 8, sevens Springbok Ryan Kankowski.

Haunted house 'ghost' revealed

Pretoria - Barefoot, wearing just a shirt and hugging one of his five dogs, 60-year-old Desmond Smit watched in silence while police searched and later removed the body of his embalmed mother from his home at the weekend.

His mother, Talita, died in Eugene Marais Hospital in Pretoria of a heart attack in 2001.

Smit made arrangements with a funeral parlour to embalm his mother's body.

Her body was placed in a coffin in a refrigerated room next to the front door.

The coffin's lid was kept open and the glass that sealed off the bottom part of the coffin was decorated with dried flowers and a silver angel.

Some residents of Doreen Street thought Talita had been buried in the garden and others speculated her remains were kept in an ordinary fridge.

Another rumour was that she had been murdered in the house, just like the previous owner.

Have to get permission

However, the truth came to light at the weekend when the coffin was moved out of the refrigerated room and taken to Pretoria mortuary.

Sunnyside police station acting commander Gawie Alberts said it was not unusual for family members to keep the remains of a loved one in special refrigerated rooms, but they had to get permission from the municipality.

"It's a family affair. We've got to establish if Smit got permission to keep his mother's remains in the refrigerated room."

Police decided to move Talita's remains to the Pretoria mortuary after establishing that the house had had no electricity for the past two days.

Aus to toughen citizenship laws

Sydney - A lawmaker in Prime Minister John Howard's conservative government on Sunday recommended tightening Australia's citizenship requirements, saying the national identity was under threat.

Andrew Robb, the parliamentary secretary for immigration, on Sunday released a discussion paper recommending that all would-be citizens pass a compulsory test assessing their English skills and knowledge of Australian history, values and customs.

The paper also recommends that the waiting period for becoming a citizen be raised from three years to four.

"Australian citizenship is a privilege. It ... gives us our identity. It tells who we are, where we fit in the world," Robb told the Nine television network. "It is a unifying force in Australia and if we give it away like confetti it is not valued."

The discussion paper will be circulated among lawmakers in Canberra before being turned into legislation for a vote, possibly later this year.

The prime minister has already expressed his support for a possible bill, saying "cultural diversity should never come at the expense of ... national identity."

The proposal is the latest development in a long-running debate about immigration in Australia, where more than 20 percent of the population was born overseas.

It follows a recent crackdown on illegal immigrants and concerns that extremist Islamic views could be gaining a foothold in some ethnic communities.

Some have suggested the proposal is the latest in a string of measures aimed at preventing terrorist activity in Australia. Others have said such a plan could backfire by making potential terrorists feel more isolated from mainstream Australia.

However, Robb rejected these claims.

"Any unified society can deal more fully with terrorism, but this is not an anti-terrorism initiative," he said.

Nevertheless, the proposal has been criticized by several ethnic support groups, who say it would discriminate against immigrants from non English-speaking countries, especially those with limited education or who are illiterate in their native languages.

Robb said a recent influx of newcomers from non-European countries had contributed to a general feeling that Australia's national identity was under threat.

He said the "broader community" would feel more comfortable if immigrants were required to learn some English and show an understanding of local customs before becoming citizens.

"It is very important that people have the time - four years at least - and the understanding and the English skills that when they make the pledge to become an Australian citizen that they know what they are pledging to," Robb said.

Smoker sets hospital on fire

Johannesburg - About 20 patients were evacuated early on Sunday morning after a fire broke out on the fourth floor of a hospital in Roodepoort, Johannesburg emergency services said.

Apparently the fire started at 01:30 after a patient was smoking in his room at Flora Clinic, said spokesperson for ER24 Werner Vermaak.

The male patient was later found uninjured in his bathroom. No one was injured in the fire.

"Upon arrival the hospital's top floor was filled with dense smoke. Some of the staff made effort to extinguish the fire whilst paramedics from ER24 and NetCare911 evacuated the patients in the ward."

Some patients were treated for smoke inhalation, Vermaak said.

The fire was put out in half an hour and all the patients were moved to a safe ward in the hospital.
