Smoker sets hospital on fire

Johannesburg - About 20 patients were evacuated early on Sunday morning after a fire broke out on the fourth floor of a hospital in Roodepoort, Johannesburg emergency services said.

Apparently the fire started at 01:30 after a patient was smoking in his room at Flora Clinic, said spokesperson for ER24 Werner Vermaak.

The male patient was later found uninjured in his bathroom. No one was injured in the fire.

"Upon arrival the hospital's top floor was filled with dense smoke. Some of the staff made effort to extinguish the fire whilst paramedics from ER24 and NetCare911 evacuated the patients in the ward."

Some patients were treated for smoke inhalation, Vermaak said.

The fire was put out in half an hour and all the patients were moved to a safe ward in the hospital.
