Airport rage at overbookings

Waldimar Pelser, Beeld

Johannesburg - South African Airways introduced an extra flight from here to Cape Town on Wednesday night after many furious passengers had been taken off an over-booked afternoon flight.

Elsa Kruger of Johannesburg told Die Burger there were "queues of angry passengers" at SAA counters at Johannesburg International Airport when they were told there was no room for them on the 16:00 SA353 flight to Cape Town on which they had been booked.

"How on earth does one over-book the flight so soon before the long weekend?" she asked.

Then she had a flight at 17:00 and, as compensation, received a free ticket from SAA.

SAA spokesperson Jacqui O'Sullivan said the airline was experiencing a "very big demand" in the run-up to the long weekend and 18 passengers were affected by over-booking on the 16:00 flight.
